We have one of the finest programs in diabetes where a team of specialists including a diabetes & hormone specialist, development & behavioral paediatrician, psychologist, dietician, and diabetes educator works together for the best of the children and family. The problem areas we deal with in the Endocrine division includes the following:

Growth disorders

  • Short stature
  • Tall stature
  • Not gaining appropriate weight
  • Weight loss

Growth is an essential part of childhood. Every child should have right to grow to the best of his/her potential. Concerns for growth is a very common problem. We as Pediatric Endocrinologist are specialist in child’s growth disorders and had published good number of research paper in this area.

Obesity

  • Nutritional obesity
  • Syndromic Obesity
  • Metabolic Syndrome

With the change in lifestyle and readily available food in past 2 decades, obesity is no more an issue of only wealthy people. Childhood obesity is a major problem being faced in India and have major implication on future health of child. We offer a comprehensive program for obesity including assessment of body composition (body fat, fat mass, muscle mass), diet plan, lifestyle modifications and psychological care.

Pubertal disorders

  • Early puberty
  • Delayed puberty
  • Premature thelarche
  • Premature adrenarche

Puberty is a normal phenomenon bridging a child to adulthood. Girls have breast development followed by hair growth in armpits & groin and last comes Menarche. Boys have genital growth followed by hair growth in armpits & groin. If any of these changes are coming before 8 years in girls and 9.5 years in boys they are early. If they do not appear till 13 years in girls and 14 years in boys it is late. It is essential to keep an eye on it. In early puberty it can hamper growth and psychological adjustments. If it is late it can affect the overall body metabolism, growth, fertility/ hormonal issues & have a psychological impact. These issues needs to be addressed without waiting.

Thyroid disorders

  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Juvenile hypothyroidism
  • Congenital hypothyroidism

Disorders of thyroid affect whole of the body. Most importantly it affects both mental & physical growth of the child. Thyroid hormone problems can start right from the birth and hence every child needs testing of thyroid function (newborn screening). Hypothyroidism (low thyroid hormones) can be treated very efficiently. High thyroid function can be deteriorating too and requires to be seen by a specialist.

Diabetes

  • Type 1 diabetes
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Rare form of diabetes (MODY, CFRD)

Type 1 diabetes is a common form of diabetes in children. The presenting complaints commonly are excessive thirst, excessive urine, weight loss and increased hunger. In this diabetes the insulin is not formed and hence needs treatment with insulin. However, the right answer/ therapy to this condition is NOT JUST INSULIN. It requires a complete management of diabetes diet, care, glucose monitoring, handling daily issues, coping with this condition and living daily with it is a challenge. We aim at a comprehensive care with our team focusing on medical care, diet, exercise, education of diabetes, daily living tips and psychological support helping to bring the best out of the child. Similarly with rise in obesity type 2 diabetes is no rarer in children. It requires an experienced team to handle such patients and it has good major future implications if not handled properly earlier.

Calcium, Vitamin D & Bone disorders

  • Rickets
  • Hypocalcemia & Hypercalcemia
  • Vitamin D deficiency & excess
  • Osteogenesis Imperfecta (recurrent fractures)

Bones are the foundation of our body. Just as any building requires a solid foundation our bones should also be strong for our body to perform well. We as Pediatric Endocrinologists are experts in managing deformities in bones like rickets which are treated with medications, bone metabolism disorders, low or high calcium, repeated fractures and deficiency or excess of vitamin D.

Neonatal Endocrinology

  • Neonatal Hypoglycemia
  • Neonatal Calcium disturbances
  • Disorders of Sexual Differentiation
  • Care of short for gestational age babies

Endocrine disorders can happen right from newborn till elder children. Repeated low sugars during neonatal period have a major impact on neurological & developmental area of the child. Children born with a low birth weight (<2.5 kg) needs to be seen by an endocrinologist for the answer of question that ‘whether child is growing appropriately or not and what could be the future growth complications?’

Adrenal Disorders

  • CAH
  • Adrenal insufficiency
  • Cushing’s disease and syndrome

Adrenal glands secrete steroid hormones. Steroid hormones are nothing but chemicals that are required for proper function of body. If these hormones are low then child will get tired easily, will have low body sodium, low blood pressure & it can be life threatening. If excess (high blood pressure, short height, increase weight, high sugars) they can lead to devastating consequences.

Glucose homeostasis Disorders

  • Insulin resistance
  • Ketotic hypoglycemia
  • Congenital Hyperinsulinism
  • Hypoglycemia- Neonatal & Pediatric

Excessive insulin secretion during childhood can lead to repeated low sugars. Also there can be situations where body is not giving response to insulin and blood sugars go high. These issues are managed by a Pediatric Endocrinologist.

Disorders of sexual differentiation

  • Hypospadias
  • Clitoromegaly
  • Atypical genitalia
  • Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia
  • Undescended testis with hypospadias

There are situations where the genitalia of a child are neither like a boy nor like a girl. Such situations are called as atypical genitalia. These issues are very complicated and are handled by a Pediatric Endocrinologist best. It is very important to understand that this social emergency needs to be handled carefully as the future of a child depends on the diagnosis and combined decision of the family and treating team.

Endocrine tumors

  • Tumors of Testis
  • Tumors of Ovaries
  • Tumors of Adrenal
  • Tumors of Pancreas
  • Pituitary Tumors (craniopharyngioma)

Just like any organ cancer endocrine organs can also develop it. These cancers need treatment and future follow-up by a Pediatric Endocrinologist after surgery or chemotherapy.

Disorders of Water Regulation

  • CSW
  • SIADH
  • Diabetes insipidus

Excessive urination, low sodium, high sodium and decreased urination can happen due to hormonal imbalance where a Pediatric Endocrinologist can help to treat these conditions.

Gynecological Endocrinology

  • Polycystic ovarian disease
  • Menstrual disorders of adolescent girls

Irregular periods, excessive bleeding and absence of periods can be a sign of underlying major disturbance in body. There could be hormonal problems leading to it. Oral combined pills (OC pills) are not always the answer and treatment depends on the cause. Hence, a Pediatric Endocrinologist can be of help in such conditions.

Andrology

  • Gynecomastia
  • Adolescent boy’s sexual & pubertal issues

Just as girls have gynecological problems boys too can have issues which comes under andrology. Gynecological issues can be observed by menstrual disturbances. However, many a times in boys these issues are overlooked. If a boy develops any breast tissue it can be sign of worry and hence needs to be seen by a Pediatric Endocrinologist.
